to the truth. and i think that governor romney will likely whether he likes it or not have an opportunity to try to explain how you pay for a $5 trillion tax cut for the wealthy, and not have it end up as every study has shown raising taxes on middle-class families. >> they've come up wait new study today where they say i think with what you could call dynamic scoring, that tax reform will produce economic growth if you want to prebutt that. >> well, you know, andrea, you and i both have been in washington a long time. and when the math doesn't add up, somebody comes up with these unique economic theories that somehow despite the fact that the numbers don't equal up, trust us, because everything will work out just fine. that's exactly what's gotten us into this mess. that's why when barack obama walked in to the oval office the first day in 2009 and we were a trillion dollars in the hole for that fiscal year. let's be clear. if you want to be straight with the american people and the american people want you to be straight with them, you owe it to the american people to explain not throug

or worse and i think governor romney is going to make it better and that's what he's going to say tonight. >> a note about your home state senate race. what do you do about todd akin? do you think he should be elected to the united states senate? >> well, you know, i said the other day, i think we need change in the government in general and the united states senate in particular. i think we need a senator and senate who will vote to repeal obama care, get the budget under control. >> despite what he said? >> that's not claire -- i said i'm supporting mr. akin and he's going to work as hard as he can. >> mitt romney is not supporting todd akin. >> i'm a missourian. i want a senator who will vote to change the way the federal government is operating. that's not the incumbent of missouri. >> thank you for being with us today. >> up next, our politico briefing. the five things to watch for tonight in denver. you're watching "andrea mitchell reports" special coverage of the presidential debate live in denver, only on msnbc. humans -- even when we cross our t's and dot our i's, we still run in

mitchell reports," a bout last night, president obama and governor romney, what both are saying about their debate performance. >> when i got on to the stage, i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. but it couldn't have been mitt romney because the real mitt romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts that favor the wealthy, the fellow on stage last night said he didn't know anything about that. >> last night i thought was a great opportunity for the american people to see two very din visions for the country. and i think it was helpful to be able to describe those visions. i saw the president's vision as trickle down government and i don't think that's what america believes in. >> overnight polls and "the denver post" give round one to romney. as a republican challenger went after the president's record. >> i just don't know how the president could have come into office, facing 23 million people out of work, rising unemployment, and economic crisis at the kitchen table, and spent his energy and passion fo

that night was the -- astonishing walking away or effort to walk away by governor romney of some of the most -- some of the key proposals he's been making for 18 straight months. you know, on the central issue of taxes, he's been saying every day for 18 months that he wants a 20% cut in marginal tax rates and he'll figure out a way that won't increase the deficit. well there's only one way to make that happen, that is to raise the tax burden on middle income americans. the number on his tax cut is $5 trillion. because he's talking about a 20% cut in marginal rates, eliminating the alternative minimum tax, estate tax and other deductions, $480 billion a year, $5 trillion over ten years, that's the number. then he says, you know, every day for the last 18 months, i've been talking about repealing every aspect of obama care, but actually i didn't mean it. well it's too late for that. if you repeal obama care across the board, that means that kids can no longer stay on their parents' coverage through age 26, it means that we can go back to a system of denying coverage for preexisting conditions,

prepare for their first debate. both sides trying to lower expectations. >> governor romney, he's a good debater. i'm just okay. >> president obama is a very -- he's a very gifted speaker. the man's been on the national stage for many years. he's an experienced debater. he's done these kinds of debates before. this is mitt's first time on this kind of a stage. >> flashpoint libya, the white house on the defensive after reports of both security and intelligence nurse in benghazi before that terror attack. >> standing up, sitting down. >> which ever one you like. >> there you go. >> do whatever they tell us. >> the white house line is you heard the president say, osama bin laden is dead, al qaeda is done, everything is fine in the middle east. this, obviously, contradicts -- ther series of events contradicts that campaign slogan. so, the fact is, that this was clearly an act of terror committed by people who were pretty well trained jihadists. >> more carnage in afghanistan. the taliban take responsibility for a suicide attack that killed 14 today including three americans. we are deployed
